Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason takes Manhattan

New York has a new problem...

Jason Voorhees rises from his watery grave he eventually ends up on a cruise ship destined for New York City. Also aboard is Rennie and her boyfriend Sean. She has a bright future ahead of her as long as her mean uncle does not stand in her way. She soon learns that her uncle is not the only horror she has to face. One by one the crew and passengers meet their fate, as Jason makes himself at home on the ship. After dropping an anchor in the middle of a storm, the few survivors are forced into a life boat. And, Jason hot on their tail. They make it to New York but, so does Jason! Now the horror spills out all over the Big Apple as Jason is a man on a mission within the streets of Manhattan. Jason Takes Manhattan is the most daring of the Paramount efforts. Jason is taken out of the woods at Crystal Lake and put right in the middle of Manhattan. Experience Friday the 13th like never before as Jason unleashes... terror in times square!

This would be Paramounts last offering in the Friday series and what a way to go. I believe Jason Takes Manhattan is under rated by many. The movie captures a great 80's New York feel to it. Even though this is a very different environment for Jason it still keeps that original Friday feel. Over all the story is well written considering the subject matter mixed with the new environment. This time we have students who are looking forward to getting out of school and starting their new lives. 'Rennie' (Jenson Daggett) and she does a great job of getting us to care about her character. Her uncle 'Charles' (Peter Mark Richman) gives Jason some competition at being the bad guy in this film. The struggle between these two unfolds as the story progresses. Even though Charles is as strict as they come some of the students, 'Tamara' (Sharlene Martin) and 'Wayne' (Martin Cummins) manage to pull the wool over his eyes and black mail him. One character I would like to have seen more of was 'J. J.' (Saffron Henderson). She was a rocker with a care free spirit who helped branch out the different stereotypes in the film. Saffron would go on to be the voice of Hamtaro among other characters. Rennie's love interest 'Sean' (Scott Reeves) tries to help Rennie tackle her fears but has problems of his own with his dad, 'Admiral Robertson' (Warren Munson). Kane Hodder once again donned the infamous hockey mask and played Jason like no one can, not to mention an early acting appearance by Kelly Hu. This film shows some of the real world horrors as well . Drug addicts that live in the alleys and mug people at random and the cold fact that if you are being chased by a madman in the big city, it is most likely no one will believe you. Most of the film is spent on the cruise ship saving Manhattan for the main event. The story moves along well and the ending you will have to see to believe. Paramount Friday's had a feel all their own and Even though that may be gone, Jason still lives on to keep the blood dancing on the water at Camp Crystal Lake.
