Sean S. Cunningham the creator of the first, returns to bring you the last. Jason Goes To Hell... and he's not coming back!
This was New Line Cinema's first Jason film. They could not secure the Friday the 13th name rights at the time so Jason's name became the title. New Line took a different approach than Paramount by changing the formula a bit. If you are a hardcore fan of the first 8 then this film may not be for you. The film attempts to explain how and why Jason is what he is. Most fans including myself don't think that this is the true legend. There is a completely different feel to this film when compared to other Friday's. More mystery and more mature characters. The film starts off tipping it's hat to the Friday's of old with a pretty young woman (Julie Michaels) all alone at Crystal Lake taking a bath when suddenly the lights go out! Classic formula indeed but, when Jason goes after this girl, he is in for a surprise. From that point on, the new feel begins. We are led into a story of Stephen (John D. Lemay) trying to get back together with his old girlfriend, Jessica (Kari Keegan). He ends up being blamed for her Mom Dianna's (Erin Gray) death. After a trip to the Voorhees house, Stephen learns that Jessica's new boyfriend is out to use her to further his own career. He also learns a secret about the Voorhees family that could be the key to destroy Jason. Meanwhile getting Jessica to believe he did not kill her Mom is not an easy task. The film has a very good pace and the acting is superb. I recommend this film to those who want to know the secrets of Jason. If you like the mysterious side of Jason than this film may disturb you. It gives away a lot as far as why he won't die and how you have to kill him. Well written and the characters are all way past their teens and really involved in their own lives. Kane Hodder plays Jason as well as a security guard in the film. Screenplay Writer Dean Lorey also makes an appearance as a coroner. Director Adam Marcus brought coffee to Sean S. Cunningham on the set of the first film. Now he is in the Director's chair and Sean is producing. CGI is introduced into the Friday films with this installment as well as stop motion miniatures. The M.P.A.A. had a field day chopping this film down to an R rating. Both R and Director's cut available. I like the Director's cut myself ...GORE, GORE, GORE!
